Grupo Ilu Axé
Spirit of Rio ... |
What's in a name? Grupo = Group, Ilu = Rhythm or Drum and Axé = Positive energy and life force. The name Grupo Ilu Axé combines Portuguese and Yoruban words. Yoruban is the ancient African dialect of Candomblé. Its arrival in Brazil is a direct result of the slave trade in the Americas. |
... at Carnaval time. |
The group presents the songs, rhythms and dances of Samba Reggae fused with the traditional African-rooted music of Candomblé. When the full ensemble takes the stage, you can look forward to a ten-piece percussion section, a vocal chorus and hip-swinging Samba-Reggae dancers. |

Life-enhancing rhythms ... |

The group is multinational, including performers from Brazil, Chile, Australia, Portugal, France, Greece and the UK, all united in a deep-seated passion for Brazilian culture. Exuberant energy is the watchword. Beautifully costumed, the show looks as good as it sounds. Grupo Ilu Axé conjures up the spirit of the Carnaval de Rio on the stage. |
