How to plan party music

Live music sets the mood at your party

Get your celebration off to a flying start with live music.

A birthday party is a time for congratulations, with the Birthday Boy or Girl the centre of attention. Musicians striking up as your VIP enters the room gives the event a real sense of occasion from the outset.

Any style of music which puts a spring in the step is appropriate. Light Classical or Swing Jazz adds a "Ritzy" up-market ambience to the event. If you're after a more friendly family feel, you might consider traditional tunes ... Irish style. If suave and sophisticated is the impression you're after, then Mainstream Jazz, New York-style, will set the scene beautifully. You want effervescent excitement? The spine-tingling Latin rhythms of South American Salsa instantly spring to mind.

Put live music in the background.

Music in the background gives a real lift to the ambience of a birthday celebration. Atmospheric live music enhances the aura of happiness around the person for whom the party is being held. If the level of sound is pitched correctly, the music engenders a sense of relaxed togetherness and encourages chatter, rather than detracting from it.

The number of guests usually dictates the number of musicians needed to create the desired effect. With discreet amplification, a duo (comprising an accompanying instrument, such as piano or guitar, with a top-line instrument such as violin, flute or saxophone) will provide sufficient atmosphere for a party of up to 70 people. If your celebration is larger, you would be wise to consider a trio or quartet.

Make the most of your musicians.

Make the best use of the musical skill at your disposal. When you engage musicians to perform, you can typically expect them to play three sets of live music, each approximately 45 minutes in length, or perhaps two longer sets.

If you're organising a sit-down meal, your musicians can first serenade the guests at the drinks reception, then perform in the background while the meal is being served. The quality of atmosphere that only live music can bring to an event is just the thing to turn your party into a really magical occasion.

With careful use of your investment in live music you can achieve that elusive "added-extra" that transforms an event into a truly memorable celebration ... without breaking the bank!
